Obituary of Brian Edward Muir

COHOES- Brian E. Muir, 65, of Cohoes, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday April 7, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with ALS. Brian was born in Albany on September 5, 1956, the son of Joan Muir and the late Kenneth E. Muir. He leaves behind a loving family that adored him. His beloved wife Suzanne Leonard Muir, his mother Joan Devine Muir, sisters Donna (Paul) Jossman and Karen (Jeff) Obier. He also leaves behind his two daughters who he cherished with all his heart, Dana Muir Preston (Kyle) of Guilford CT and Kelly Muir Barry (Alan) of Broomfield, CO. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Skylar and Ethan Preston, his niece, and nephews: Daniel Jossman, Thomas Jossman and Holly Jossman and his aunt Judy Devine Dean and cousin Katie Dean. During his illness he had many supporters from hospice and the St. Peters ALS center but his primary caregiver over the years was Mark. Mark gave Brian amazing support and provided well needed levity during a difficult time. The two became more than friends, they were like brothers. Brian had a long and successful career in the insurance industry, most recently working at AmTrust in Latham NY until his retirement in August 2021. There he had an amazingly supportive group of coworkers. AmTrust honored Brian with the Inspirational Leader award which meant the world to him. Brian was a graduate of Columbia High School in 1974, Hudson Valley Community College in 1975 and The College of Insurance in 1979. Over the course of his lifetime, he lived in Rensselaer NY where he grew up, Brooklyn NY, Roselle Park NJ, Columbia MD, East Greenbush NY and most recently Cohoes NY. He loved his condo with a view of the Hudson River and enjoyed watching the boats and wildlife that he could see from his window there. Brian was very active in the Boy Scouts growing up and achieved the rank of Life Scout. He went on many trips with the boy scouts including Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron New Mexico. Brian was an avid traveler and loved to explore new places both in the US and internationally including France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. Brian and his wife Suzanne loved to travel and enjoyed multiple cruises to exotic locations as well as trips to Key West, Curacao and most notably Paris. Brian was infamous with regard to day trips, researching and planning all kinds of adventures. New Orleans was another favorite place where they went to Mardi Gras for their honeymoon. They also enjoyed multiple jazz festivals and outdoor picnics under the stars. He and Suzanne enjoyed time with their grandchildren who brought them immeasurable joy. His favorite place to vacation however was Cape Cod where he and his family had vacationed every year since he was a kid. Brian continued that tradition with his girls going every year to Truro and Provincetown meeting up with his mom and sisters. He and his family shared many special memories there that he always held dear to his heart. Brian was also an avid runner, running 4 marathons and countless other races, he loved history, was an avid reader and a voracious consumer of news, especially politics. He enjoyed good wine, good food and inherited a love for football from his Dad. They enjoyed watching many games together over the years. Brian was a diehard Minnesota Vikings fan and never wavered in his enthusiasm. SKOL! Cremation took place through the care of Riverview Funeral Home. Relatives and Friends are invited to call from 10am to 12 pm on Thursday, April 14 in the Riverview Funeral Home, 218 2nd Avenue (corner of 104th Street) in Troy, where a memorial service will be conducted at 12 o'clock in the funeral home. A celebration of life will follow the service.
