Obituary of Arthur F. Sorel, Jr.

Pittstown, NY - Arthur F. Sorel, Jr., 67, of Pittstown, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2015 after battling a long illness surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of Christine (Soltys) Sorel, loving father of: Thomas Sorel, Jennifer (Anthony) Sorel-Gasbara and Michael (Kristin) Sorel, cherished grandfather of: Ryan Williams, Jordyn Sorel, Raegan Sorel and Jack Gasbara. Dearest brother of: Charles Sorel of Petersburgh, David (Nadine) Sorel of Gansevoort and Bruce (Tina) Sorel of Greenwich. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Son of the late Arthur F. and Helen A. (Denaker) Sorel, Arthur was born in Troy on December 23, 1947. In his youth he resided in the Troy area and attended Troy schools until being drafted into the military service. He served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969. Arthur possessed a skill for anything mechanical, so it was natural that he operated the heavy artillery during his service. Upon his honorable discharge, Arthur's mechanical experience from the Army lead him to employment in the industrial and mechanic workforce. First with G.E. for 10 years; from there Art became a machinist at the Watervliet Arsenal 14 years, where he retired. After retirement he became a mechanic for the former Laidlaw Bus Company. Arthur married the former Christine Soltys of Cohoes on May 6, 1972 in St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church. For the past 36 years they made their home in Pittstown, where they have resided since Thanksgiving Day 1978. Arthur was formerly a member of the Hoosick Falls Fraternal Order of Eagles until his illness. Art was a man of few words but he had the biggest heart. He loved his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He was an avid hunter (both bow and rifle), he enjoyed fishing, but especially deep sea fishing. Art was "a jack-of-all-trades" and was able to fix anything; he was always available to help those in need. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, November 29, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Riverview Funeral Home, 218 2nd Avenue (corner of 104th Street) in Troy, where prayers will be offered at 5p.m. that same evening. Interment will take place on Tuesday, December 1, at 11 a.m. in St. Michael's Cemetery on Middletown Road in the Town of Waterford.
