My father purchased this from him many years ago. He’d love to hear the backstory of it and what became of his “warehouse”

Dear Miriam, and family of Faust,I was so saddened to hear of Fausts passing. I only found out today. Through a mutual friend, Lawrence Van Alstine. Lawrence was a wonderful and unusual man. I was so fortunate to have met him and you too Miriam once many years ago. he kindly invited me and my then boyfriend into your home. I am also an artist and I loved Lawrence's work and we had phone conversations about art and about Oshun and many other spiritual subjects. Lawrence was a larger than life person, who brought great positive energy and creativity and a lof of mystery into our world. I send my sincere condolences to you Miriam and to the rest of Lawrence's family. It will not be the same without his energy. sincerely Terry Zacuto

I met Lawrence, or Lar-Lar as my husband Jack would call him or 'Faust' back in 1979 when he, Miriam and the dogs all lived at 189-11 Northern Blvd in Flushing with Bruce Matthews, Miriam's son. Back then, Faust was a wood sculptor or 'chopper' as Jack would say and together Faust, Jack, Bill, Miriam and I would admire his work over a few Buds. Faust then learned metal sculpture and incorporated glass, and anything optical adding light dimension to his works both in wood and metal and in his static displays. Later still he even used crystals, dvds, and he drilled plastic reliefs which he colored by hand into optical delights. Lawrence was a friend, a minister, a comfort, a pal, someone I could confide in and trust whom I knew would give me always the right advice. Lawrence knew God and had a good relationship with him. I know he rests in peace because he worked so hard to get there.

Faust asked me to write him a song based on how he felt not knowing his biological mother and about how he came to know the Lord after finding a stone with an image of a cross into it at nine years old. I also added some details about how his generosity inspired others. Thank you Lord Jesus for your Spirit in writing these words: MOTHERLESS CHILD by Susan Gleeman for Brother Faust Verse 1: She left his world, left him alone Bearing the pain, losing a mother he had never known She gave him away, to sheltering arms Knew deep in her heart, he would not be harmed Motherless child Verse 2: He dug down deep, deep in the earth A cross laden rock revealed Him there at his birth He would follow Him, to eternity But she would never know just who he’d be Motherless child CHORUS: Motherless child, she did not know Who he’d become, and the seeds he would sow But the Father’s son, showed him the light A crystal sign from heaven, everything was alright For this motherless child Verse 3: Spirit of love, deep in his heart The gift of Jesus’ presence showed up in his art Sculptures of joy With pain all about Sharing his world with others, he would heal the ones down and out Motherless child Verse 4: He opened his doors, welcomed them in The motherless and fatherless, bound up in their sin He brought to them, a message from God The Universe holds mysteries where Angels trod Motherless child BACK to CHORUS 2x’s

Dear Miriam, Years ago you and Faust introduced me to the world of spirituality (with the Birthday Book). It continues to enrich my life and those around me. I will cherish the many artworks of Faust enlivening our homes, especially the commissioned lucite portrait of my dogs which I twisted his arm to create for me and his personal spirit piece (he said that "Nate said, let Lynn have it" just after my father died). I will miss our visits. I considered him my living spirit guide. His voice and laugh will be in my heart always.

I found out last night that Faust had died and I am thinking of your family today. When I found out he had a stroke I went to the hospital at Nathan Littauer, but, he had already been transferred. I feel very badly that I did not get to say goodbye to him. I spoke to him a couple of months ago, and we had talked about his work and mine and a sculpture garden. I was very excited to get the project off of the ground and have Faust work with me. His laugh was contagious and his energy for art was that was well. I loved to talk to him and our philosophies were very much the same for what we loved to do. I will miss him. I have one piece of his art, that he made for me after my first cd was released, and I will treasure the memory of knowing him. I admired him greatly and I am proud to have called him my friend.

I met Faust in the late 90s. We became instant friends. As the song says,we were kings and kindred fools. Over the years we collaborated on several art projects and we learned much from each other. He taught me how to carve and I shared my expertise of color. And Miriam's beautiful soul was ever present to ground us when we dreamed too far from home. He and Miriam are forever in our hearts. Thank you Faust, for being my friend. We'll talk again.

I wish to espress my condolences to the family for the loss of Mr. Faust. I am from Northville and so enjoyed his art park beside the old railroad station in Sacandaga Park. I use to take my gkids there when they came for a visit. It was so interesting, clever, and such talent. Northville folks were so sorry when the artpark was moved from our area. I also always enjoyed talking to Miriam. One day she took me in to the apartment that was in the old RR station and showed me more of the art work done by her husband. You all must have tremendous memories of him and what he has left behind in his art. I don't think you probably remember me but might remember that I am the town and village historian here in N'ville. Gail M Cramer

Dear sweet Miriam, there are so many wonderful memories I have of you and Faust. You were such awesome neighbors. Remember the time he helped me try to put out the yard fire? Speaking of, I loved sitting around your fire pit at your place in the Sacandaga Park. You are both so special. Wishing you peace, dear sweet lady. Much love to you and Faust...you are both in my heart. Stella

I am sorry I was unable to celebrate his life with everyone today during his memorial service. I spent today wearing one of his spoon necklaces and remembering all the awesome and magical times at the ART PARK in Northville and at his current home in Gloversville. I am proud to be an owner of several of his pieces. He was a great inspiration to me. He was like a brother, he gave me spiritual guidance, and always honored and praised the artist/creator in me. I will miss our long distant phone conversations, and sitting on his bed philosophizing. My heart is extended to Miriam, and his children, and all his friends in peace and love. We have all been blessed to know Faust.

I'm so sorry. He was a true artist. I had met him only once (after years of my parents raving about his work, when I was visiting from out of town, they took me to see his sculptures at the train depot). His thoughtful playful art made me happy. After that, whenever I was in town, I wanted to see his work. Peace to all.
