Obituary of John D. Lamoureux
John Lamoureux of Delmar, NY died on Sunday, January 1 after a long struggle with cancer at Diamond Hill Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Troy, NY.
He will be remembered for his gentle, caring nature and "go with the flow" attitude toward life.
John was born on January 31, 1948 in Newport, VT to Roland and Alberta Prive Lamoureux.
He went to Sacred Heart Schools and was active in Boy Scouts, where he was the bugler, and was first chair trumpet in the High School Band.
He was also active in Chorus, Drama, Radio Club and worked on the school newspaper in his Senior year.
He graduated in 1965.
While living in Newport, he worked at Montgomery Wards and played guitar in a local band.
He also liked to fish, play soccer and kick the can.
After graduation from High School, John spent a short time in Burlington, VT, then moved to Lyndonville, VT.
He worked at a local gas station and a W.T. Grants store and continued to play music with friends in a band called "Sonic White."
One summer he worked in Mallet's Bay, VT at a restaurant.
He studied at Lyndon State College and received a B.A. degree in Behavioral Science in May of 1971.
His first job after college was at Vermont Tobacco in Newport, VT, but then he moved to Burlington, VT, and from there to Plattsburgh, NY working for the Big L Drug Store.
He enrolled in the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and received a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in May of 1987.
He loved psychology and continued to read extensively in this area. After studying at Plattsburgh, John taught entry-level classes at Clinton Community College and worked for a crisis center.
John also enjoyed skiing and ice skating, teaching ice skating lessons while in Plattsburgh.
He landed a job with the Press Republican newspaper and worked there for 14 years, a job that he absolutely loved.
As an Editorial Assistant, he designed graphics/maps for features/news stories, wrote "Week in Review," "Astronomy" and "Science Quiz" and provided computer assistance to staff.
In 1992, he earned two Editor's Awards for graphics published on May 24 and Aug 17.
He was married in 1992 to Monique McBride and soon after, their son, Andrew, was born.
From the day of his birth, Andrew became the center of John's life.
Although John and Monique were divorced in 2003, he continued to spend as much time as he could with his son.
Andrew inherited his father's love of psychology, astronomy, music, and reading.
They went to many plays, musicals, and classical concerts together.
The family moved to the Albany area in the fall of 1997.
John found employment at Test-Com, and later at Matthew Bender as a Technical Support Specialist.
He began to take computer courses and became a MS Certified Professional in 2002 and was certified in Network Management, Security and Infrastructure in 2005.
John found that he loved computers, networks and databases.
He worked at Siemens Business Corp, and DocStar.
His last employment was with Keane, Inc. where he worked at the NY State Lottery providing technical assistance in both hardware and software issues.
John is survived by his son, Andrew, of Demar, NY, and four sisters: Rolande Moore of Manchester, NH; Paulette Turcotte and her husband, Roger, of Ft. Myers, FL; Pauline Kelley and her husband, Dean, of Enterprise, AL; and Diane Ciba and her husband, Michael, of Watertown, CT.
He also leaves many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Teri.
Calling hours will be held from 1 - 3 pm on Sunday, January 15 at Riverview Funeral Home.
A time of remembrance will be held at 2 pm. A service will also be held in VT later this spring or summer.
