Obituary of Leo Scarlet

Leo Scarlet, 96, died on July 25, 2011 after a short illness. A former resident of Brooklyn and Queens, he and his wife Vita moved to Slingerlands, NY, three years ago. Leo was a graduate of Brooklyn College, in New York City where he studied psychology and philosophy, He was most proud of his World War II army service in Europe, often serving as a French and German translator. His lifelong passion was stamps. He was one of the foremost dealers of U.S. and Canadian stamps and twice served as president of the American Stamp Dealers Association. He was a longtime member of the American Philatelic Society. As early as 1929, he did business as Gotham Stamp Company. He worked with the Rumark Stamp Company. And for a large part of his career he operated a philatelic business under his own name. He is survived by his wife Vita, to whom he was married for 72 years, and his children Jonathan Scarlet (Bette), Marjory Scarlet Simmons (William), his granddaughter Emily McDivitt (David). He also leaves behind step grandchildren Martha Pellettier (William), David Simmons, Daniel Simmons (Amy) and Michael Simmons (Kim) and several step greatgrandchildren. Leo was predeceased by his sisters Ruth and Esther, brothers Will, Jack and Ted. Funeral Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
