Obituary of Timothy Joseph Lunney
Timothy J. Lunney, "TJ" of Pittstown, NY, passed away suddenly and all too soon on November 29, 2009 at Albany Medical Center Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Schenectady, NY on December 17, 1953 to the late Raymond Lunney and loving mother Helen Girard Lunney, Tim moved to Virginia after joining the U.S. Navy in 1973.
A true patriot and hero, Tim helped with the search, rescue and recovery efforts after an Air Florida 737 jetliner crashed into the Potomac River on January 13, 1982 just after take-off from Washington, D.C. National Airport.
Five passengers survived that terrible crash.
After an honorable military discharge, Tim returned to New York and enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, fishing, working on cars and playing cards. Tim was an avid Redskins fan. He was known for his kind, gentle and giving nature.
Tim could often be heard asking if anyone needed help.
If he wasn't offering help he was likely telling a joke, giving advice with a grin or working on special projects with his grandson Andrew.
Tim leaves behind the love of his life and wife of 31 years, Darlene J. Baker Lunney, daughters; Amy Downey (Scott) of Portsmouth, VA, Cristy Lunney (Fiance', David Miller) of Pittstown, NY, much loved grandsons; Dylan and Deaven of Portsmouth, VA, Andrew and Mason of Pittstown, NY and a great grandson Jonathan of Savannah, GA.
He also leaves behind a dear sister Pam Lunney and a special niece Kendall Sherry.
He is also survived by sisters Ann Dillahay of Nevada, Linda Coleman, Kathie Ference (Mark) and Marianne Anderson all of Schenectady, as well as a host of nieces, nephews many friends and loved ones including Hannah his "all bark no bite" German Shepherd.
"Tim, you will be loved and missed more than words can describe or express".
A private service will be held at a later date.
