Obituary of William J. Hegarty

TROY- William J. Hegarty, 88, of Troy, passed away on April 19, 2021 at Van Rensselaer Manor. Born in Brooklyn on June 25, 1932, William was the son of the late Michael and Katherine (Costello) Hegarty. He was the devoted husband of 48 years to the late Irene B. (King) Hegarty who passed away on April 18, 2018. William was raised in the Bronx and has since lived in East Troy, WI and finally Troy, NY. He graduated from St. Joseph's School in Barrytown, NY as well as Catholic University in Washington D.C. with a bachelor's degree. William was also enrolled in two master's programs at Marquette University. Mr. Hegarty taught mathematics and physics from 1955 to 1990 at LaSalle Institute as a Christian Brother and the Milwaukee Public Schools. Bill also coached basketball, processed tax returns for Jackson Hewitt and was an office manager for the Town of Brunswick. Mr. Hegarty held memberships with the Knights of Columbus and was also on the Republican Committee for the Town of Brunswick. He was a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park. Bill loved to fish in the Atlantic Ocean with his brother Mike. He loved all sports, especially the Brewers and Green Bay Packers. Bill loved to cook and was known as "Chef Bull" by his grandchildren. He could take the best leftovers and turn it into a meal. He also loved camping and wintering in Florida. Through his marriage to Irene, Bill gained three children, two of whom survive: Thomas (Diane) Walsh and Arlene Dinova. He was the cherished grandfather of 12 grandchildren; Kathleen (Tim) Allard, Thomas (Chris) Walsh, Michael (Jill) Walsh, Mary (David) Scott, Jennifer (Kris) Fitzpatrick, Michele Dinova, Denise (Richard) Mahoney, Beth (John) Fronczek, Jeffrey Sylvester, Timothy (Ellie) Sylvester, Jason (Jodi) Sylvester, Samantha (Megan) Kennedy, as well as many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his brother, John Hegarty, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, Bill was predeceased by his brother Michael and daughter Annina Walsh Sylvester.
