GREEN ISLAND –

Melanie Kay Nickolaus, 74, of Green Island, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2024.

The daughter of the late Bernard and Virginia (Dagne) Streeter, Melanie was born on December 8, 1949 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

While her father served in the military, Melanie was raised in many places, often relocating. The family settled in South Glens Falls where she graduated high school in 1967.

While living in Germany as an adult, Melanie was employed at the American Military Base in Heidelberg in the Army Air Force Exchange Store for 15 years as the food court manager. When she returned to the United States, she worked as a medical secretary at the Long Island Jewish Hillside Medical Center in Queens, NY.

Melanie will be fondly remembered for her compassion and humane spirit. She loved people deeply and fostered countless cats and dogs over the years providing them love and shelter. She  was also known for her faith as a devout Christian.

Survivors include two sons, Philip Manitta and Rocco Manitta (Tammy). She also leaves an extended family in Germany including a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Melanie was predeceased by her husband, Bernd Nickolaus, whom she married in Hyde Park, NY in 1992. He died in 2009.
